Dancing Houses

The cycle was born in 2001 following some forays into southern Tuscany, the historic centers of Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana mainly, which offer rural landscapes enriched by perched houses, perched on top of each other, dug into the tuff, clinging to the rock and at the time, as if they were the pieces of a fragile and refined mosaic. The seed, the idea launched in 2001 is taken up again and grows in me in a convinced and full-bodied way in 2023/24. The development of the series is enriched with compositions that tend towards the abstract and rather bold colours, compared to the pictorial production of the last twenty years, embracing a broad palette. They are buildings seen from afar as if they were composing a multi-row choir, each color a voice, each window opening an eye that in turn looks at the world. The composition is completed with Alpine architectural cues: the ancient floor-to-ceiling wooden balconies, earth/sky, suitable for drying corn on the cob and which still embellish some mountain houses. Thus Tuscany and Trentino meet and intertwine in the works. The markedly material pictorial creation offers a frontal point of view of the urban nucleus but also suggests the observation point of view from the sky, the latter, together with the same materiality, certainly a common thread of my entire journey, from the beginning to today.

They are houses that tell the lives of those who lived there, the colors are the emotions, the feelings, the intense relationships. However, the colors are also music, in fact they resonate in me like precise guitar notes that echo synaesthetically, weaving a parallel musical picture. The matter boils, full-bodied and copious, moved by the brush and fingers, furrowed by the sign, engraved by the nails, as if it were human skin marked and enhanced by the sun and time. I work with two hands and in an anomalous way compared to the traditional technique of oil painting, which is why I resort to stratified, three-dimensional solutions with deep shadows and equally extreme lights. I also face drying times lasting a year, times that are almost unthinkable in this current era.Looking at them I sometimes think that these houses can also be read as souls that communicate, that ascend, that fluctuate; sometimes they remind me of a dancer caught in her expressive creative moment.Houses as living beings themselves, which narrate their past, houses on the move, which take flight, which dance their story.
